YESSSSSS!

More proof that in all most some things I am right, and I am SO proud of sticking to my guns. And my breasts.

Nursing should continue until the baby is at least 1 year old, and there is no problem with continuing into the third year of life or longer, the new policy states. Other health groups, such as the World Health Organization, recommend breast-feeding for two years or more…

…“Why is there still a stigma?’’ Freeman asked.

The pediatrics panel concluded that widespread breast-feeding could save the country $3.6 billion annually in health care costs. And infant mortality is 21 percent lower in breast-fed babies.

“When you learn about all the advantages,’’ Freeman said,  “you think, ‘My gosh, why isn’t everybody doing this?’ ‘’

  1. OK….so what about the men who breastfeed into their fifties? Is THAT still wrong?

  2. jilbur says:

you and I are living proof that extended breastfeeding need not ruin a splendid rack. and to one nameless reader: no, that doesn’t mean that we’re stepping forward to be ‘poster moms,’ stripped to the waist.
    job—someone had to do it.

  3. Gail says:

And yet, so many women still won’t even try it.  It’s been a long time and I still miss it.

After 3 kids I went from a C to a DDD!  Too bad their hitting the floor.

Hurray for nursing babies and toddlers! Happy belated birthday to your dear mother!!

May I relate an “older nursing child” story?

A certain grandfather relates how he and his family came by ship from Finland to America when he was 6 and the youngest of 15 children. “How much for the boat tickets?” asked his worried father. “$10 each, but babes-in-arms are free.” After nervously counting up their travel money, his father and mother looked at him in a strange and meaningful way. He knew what he had to do. “So, I swallowed my pride and sucked my way across the Atlantic Ocean!”

  5. In Canada a few years ago they changed the breastfeeding recommendation to 2 years at least but longer if you can do it.
I was SO happy to read that!  Alas, this last one weaned himself at about 21 months. Bugger!

  6. Amy says:

I purposely breastfed both my girls for nearly 2 years each to try to reduce the possibility of asthma and allergies as they run in the husbands family.

I shudder to think that they could be less-healthy if I hadn’t nursed them for so long.  Considering recent events with my little one, it’s a scary prospect.

  7. Michele says:

I breastfeed for a year, and my “rack” is nicer and bigger than when I stared out. I don’t know about having a child who’s three breast feed. I personally can’t get past a child who can wipe their own bottoms, and dress themself lift my shirt for milk, when they can pour themselfs a glass of moo juice just as easily. My son has never gotten an ear infection, and in general is pretty healthy—oh and smart to boot. So I know that the amount I did, did help.

  8. Amanda says:

I can’t imagine why any woman wouldn’t RELISH nursing a toddler.  You have none of that annoying engorgement/leaking/pain and they actually SIT STILL for it!

  9. Deirdre says:

Thank you for linking to that article.  My nursing toddler appreciates it.

  10. Ben says:

If kids weren’t supposed to breastfeed, they wouldn’t package the stuff in such attractive containers.

    I’m just saying…

  11. Cat says:

Okay but I was once in a playground and a child came up to his mother to nurse and when she offered him her breast he said, no mommy, the other titty. There are just so many things wrong with that.

BIG ADVOCATE FOR BREASTFEEDING HERE!  I did it until mine wouldn’t produce anymore.  I know I know…too much info!!

  13. Kal says:

This is such an appropriate post!  Today marked the publication of the Breastfeeding (Scotland) Act of 2005 which makes it *illegal* to stop a woman from breastfeeding a child in public.

  14. Erin says:

Mindy – If I promise to be really nice will you be my personal LC next time I have a baby? :o )

  15. VenturaMom says:

Still nursing at 18 months. Aside from the ugly giant nursing bras, I love it! Since toddlerhood arrived, everytime Grace sees me topless she shrieks, “Boobies!!” does a little dance and gets all giddy. Is that not the cutest thing ever?????
Word is weeks as in: yes it takes a few weeks to become a proficient breastfeeder, but the rewards last a lifetime.

  16. VenturaMom says:

BTW – a good response for those who push to wean and say that cow’s milk is just the same…Cow’s milk is for baby cows. Mommy milk is for kids.

Word is boy, as in boy those are big.

  17. Wendy says:

I have been nursing for the past 7-years with only a day break (the 3-days between Harrison turning 4 and Catherine being born).

As I sat here tonight nursing Catherine on her 3rd birthday I was still moved to smiles today like I was the very first time I nursed her.

Did you hear about the news story that talked about nursing moms getting the same high as cocaine users?!?!?!  I’ll be nursing for YEARS!!!!!

  18. yvonne says:

Ok, so, my 42 E cup tits are TIRED.  Tired of being sucked on all day long for the past 6 months.  TIRED TIRED TIRED.

But I’ll keep doing it for at least another 6 because MY DAUGHTER REFUSES TO TAKE A BOTTLE.

But I’ll be tired and wishing she were sucking on a bottle instead of my formerly C cup tits instead.

If that makes me a bad mother… I’m ok with that because, as much as I love breastfeeding?  I”m TIRED.

    Did I mention I’m tired?

(p.s. HELL NO on the 2 year thing.  I’m too tired)

  19. jMom says:

I get a little crazy, being a food source and therefore tied to a breastpump or infant, but I am all for breastfeeding and will do it as long as I can. I am bummed that my milk dried up by 9 months with my daughter—I just loved the bedtime feeding with just the two of us at the end of the day …

  20. Joy says:

I know I’m a little late to this post, but I just had to share: There’s Nothing Sexier Than a . . . Nursing Mom?

Maybe if more men knew about this, they’d become cheerleaders for breastfeeding (esp. nursing in public):
“Honey! Look over there! That woman is breastfeeding her baby! Go sit down by her and tell her what a great job she’s doing! And take your time! Inhale deeply!”
